Greetings from John Tory

I’m very pleased to be here, I try to get to as many events as I can as a mayor, because one of the blessings of my job is to celebrate opportunities that bring people together, to learn more about each other. Some of the visitors might not know, but this is the most diverse city in the world. More than half of the people who live in Toronto were born outside the country. Those of you who live here would know that. That’s a wonderful blessing for us to have, that people from all over the world have come to live here. But at the same time, it puts a special challenge in front of us which is to learn about each other, because we pride ourselves here on celebrating things that make us different, learning about each other, finding out the things that are wonderful that other people have brought to our great city. And things like film festivals, like CineIran, really help us to do that. If you think about it for a minute, there’s nothing than can bring people together more than to look at a painting together, or to hear some music, or see a dance performance, or see a film. Because people will all see it in different ways, they can talk about it, they can experience it together. This is one of the great things about Toronto, that we have the opportunity here because we want to learn about each other and celebrate our great cultures, that we come together to have events like this. So I just want to say congratulations to Amir, and to Amir and to all of the others involved, and to all of you for attending it so well such that they had to have it in two different venues, and had even more films
